The Way Out



This "map" outlines the major areas that most people have to address to diminish their same-sex attraction and successfully overcome homosexual behavior. The more effort you apply in each of these areas, the easier your way out will be.

 

Group Work

  • Discuss issues with others who also struggle with them and get their feedback.
  • Learn to disclose.
  • Prayer together and demonstrate mutual support.
  • Hold each other accountable.
  • Learn to accept others and feel accepted by them.
  • Learn how to generalize newly learned principles and abilities.
  • Relate the process and new information to gospel principles.
  • Learn relationship skills; learn to be assertive.
  • Develop relationships with priesthood quorum/Relief Society, sports team, support group, etc.
  • Experience activities as a bridge to the real world (for example, ski trips with men/women who don't experience SSA).
  • Provide service to others as a group, both inside and outside Evergreen.
  • Education about relationships and other issues and open discussion about it.
     

Individual Work

  • Read books on gospel subjects.

  • Read books on same-sex attraction, masculinity/femininity, addictions, and related subjects from LDS authors, Christian authors, and professionals.

  • Study Evergreen workbook.

  • Personal prayer.

  • Personal exploration and growth; identify and relate to one's divine nature.

  • Develop personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ.

  • Develop one-on-one, nurturing relationships with family, close friends, an acquaintances.

  • Provide service to others, both inside and outside Evergreen.

 

Group Therapy

  • Work on relationship and communication issues (what's going on between participants).
  • Reinforce desired new traits.
  • Experiment with interpersonal relationships to achieve mutuality.
  • Disclose, hold accountable, give feedback, express support, validate each other.

Individual Therapy

  • Identify and resolve personal issues and underlying factors with help of therapist.
  • Receive encouragement, awareness, and insight.
  • Learn to internalize new information.
  • Learn to generalize.
  • Identify personal strengths and weaknesses.
  • Identify and remove barriers.
  • Identify how to live congruently with personal definition.
  • Learn to overcome addictions.
